Customs seizes drugs being smuggled via sea route

Maldives Customs has seized 1.518 kilograms of methamphetamine intended to be smuggled into the country via the sea route.

The drugs were discovered during a search of a seafreight shipment at Male’ Commercial Harbour. Customs officials found the contraband concealed within the consignment. Initial tests confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value exceeding MVR 3 million.

In a separate incident, authorities previously seized 468 kilograms of narcotics from a Sri Lankan fishing boat that had illegally entered Maldives waters near Makunudhoo. Police estimated the street value of that haul at MVR 1 billion.

Customs continues its efforts to intercept illegal drug shipments and safeguard the Maldives from narcotics trafficking.
