President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined his vision to transform the National Thalassaemia Centre into a more patient-friendly and compassionate facility. Speaking on the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku’ podcast, hosted by the President’s Office, he discussed recent improvements and future plans for the centre.
Following concerns raised about the centre, President Dr Muizzu personally visited the facility to assess its condition. As part of immediate remedial measures, a civil servant has been appointed to oversee operations, and staff reshuffling has taken place to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the government has announced the recruitment of five nurses to improve patient care.
To address resource constraints, the President highlighted efforts to secure funding for essential medical equipment. He also reassured parents and caregivers that grievances, including concerns about blood filters, are being addressed under close supervision.
A major development in the centre’s future is its planned relocation to the "Orange Hiya" building. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will take over completion work on 28 April, with a commitment to finishing all tasks within a month. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will also set up a dedicated bus stop to ensure easy access for patients.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated his commitment to establishing a state-of-the-art thalassaemia care facility as part of his presidential pledge. These steps aim to enhance the quality of care and overall experience for thalassaemia patients in the Maldives.
