Food and Drug Authority urges caution when buying chicken eggs

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has advised people to be cautious when buying chicken eggs.

The MFDA said in a statement today that the handling, sale and storage of chicken eggs poses a high risk of food safety. Hence they asked to be vary of the following when buying chicken eggs:

- Do not buy eggs that are dirty

- Prefer to buy chilled (refrigerated) eggs

- Check the expiration date of eggs and do not use expired eggs

- Do not buy cracked eggs

- Do not buy more eggs than you need

- Do not use washed eggs (washing eggs allows germs and chemicals to reach the inside of the eggs)

- Store eggs in the refrigerator to prevent other foods from getting stuck

- Foods prepared using unroasted eggs should be kept at the required temperature and should not be kept outside the refrigerator for more than two hours
