President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to implement a Generation Ban to prevent young Maldivians from taking up smoking. This initiative, revealed during the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast hosted by the President’s Office, is part of a broader effort to reduce tobacco use in the country.
The Generation Ban will ensure that young people never start using tobacco, effectively phasing out smoking in future generations. While specific details are yet to be released, the President emphasised that this is a long-term strategy. He also highlighted plans to eventually phase out tobacco imports entirely, reinforcing the government’s commitment to public health.
Similar bans have been introduced in other countries to curb youth smoking. The approach aims to cut tobacco use at its root, preventing addiction before it starts.
Beyond tobacco control, President Muizzu also discussed other health initiatives, such as making fruits and vegetables more affordable. These measures align with the government’s vision of promoting a healthier lifestyle for all Maldivians.
